For 185 years, this 400-year-old gem on the shores of Lake Biel has been a place where guests can enjoy the charm of a wine-growing village and specialties from the Seeland region. For four generations, the Kreuz was owned by the Teutsch and Mettler-Teutsch families and operated as a hotel and restaurant. In the spring of 2020, the housing cooperative Zuhause am Bielersee (www.zuhauseambielersee.ch)—which had already successfully converted the Engel Haus in Twann into senior housing and cultural spaces open to the public—purchased the Kreuz.
This allowed her to preserve the restaurant and bistro right on the lake for the local community. In the hotel section of the Kreuz, barrier-free apartments are being built for the village’s older residents. Once a hotel and restaurant with a “Jardin,” the Kreuz is now a cozy, rustic restaurant with a lakeside bistro for the residents of Ligerz, neighbors, travelers, and anyone who has something to celebrate.
